Fused glass is the process of heating glass in a kiln to the point where it begins to liquify. This facilitates the combination of two or more glass elements into a single piece.
While in a fluid state, 'inclusions' of, brass, pewter, copper or mica become enveloped by and intregal with the glass object as the glass melts in the kiln.
Alicia MacInnes trained at the Barcelona Glass Centre, studying contemporary stained glass and fused glass design as well as traditional glass restoration techniques. She then worked briefly for one of Spain's foremost glass artists Jose Castrillo in his Barcelona studio.
In 1998 she returned to Scotland, eventually setting up Glasgow Glass Studios with three friends in 2000. She frequently returns to Barcelona, as Spanish architecture and the Mediterranean culture remain some of the strongest influences in her work.
